STUDY TEXT: Mt. 16:16-19 “Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[c] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

MEM. VERSE: Isaiah. 22:22 “And key of the house of David will lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open and none shall shut; and he shall shut and none shall open.

For us to dominate, for us to receive the key of the kingdom, we must first answer the
question the same question Christ asked his disciples in Matthew 16:15b. Jesus asked “But whom say ye that I am?” Peter was able to answer this question with others agreeing with him, “Thou art Christ, the son of the Living God” vs. 16.

If Christ is the son of the Living God, then He must possess the same nature with God, though He now be in human flesh, yet the spirit of God was able to let Peter look at the flesh and see the glory of the only begotten son of God.

The question is, can you with all assurance of faith subscribe to this confession made by Peter on behalf of the Church? Let us then with all affection and adoration go to Christ and tell Him “Lord Jesus, thou art the Christ, the son of the Living God.”

We must understand that the Christian religion is a revealed religion, it has its root in
heaven, it is a religion from above, given by the inspiration of God, not by learning of
philosophers nor the politics of statesman. The revelation of Christ to us is the token
that distinguishes God’s will and the foundation of our faith to us and makes us to be
highly favoured and set apart.

With this confession by Peter, Christ told him, it is God alone that will take the glory
for this revelation, “Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jo-na (son of a dove)” – vs. 17. For this
true light saying in the midst of the darkness unbelief of this world.

Vs. 18-19; to establish the being of the church, “And I say also unto thee, that thou art
Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail
against it.” It was a promise delivered to Peter but to be applicable by the whole
congregation of the church.

The builder and founder of the church is Christ Jesus. He would not build His house on sand, but on a solid Rock which is Himself. 1 Cor. 3:11 says “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” And upon this truth which you have confessed, which has been revealed to you by the Holy Spirit, that, “Thou art the Christ, the son of the living God” I will build my church. Imagine if Christ is not the son of God who was sacrificed and is risen up for our salvation, then Christianity is cheat, our preaching is in vain, our faith is in vain and we persist yet in our sins we are not worthy of fellowship with God, 1 Cor. 15:14-17.

Christ therefore, promises to preserve His Church forever, “The gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” This implies that the church has enemies, the love of the world, the lusts of the flesh, the love of money, having a form of godliness but denying the power of Christ, ever learning but never being able to come to the knowledge of the truth, the way, the light and the life in Christ Jesus.

These oppositions by the Anti-Christ which is the design of the gates of hell (Psalms 83:2-5) shall not gain any advantage over the church. Ps. 129:2 says “they have greatly oppressed me from my youth, but they have not gained the victory over me.2 Cor. 4:8-9. The authority to administer the governance of the world was handed over to the church, vs.19. The power that have been delegated is a spiritual power. It is power for those who have their focus towards heaven, towards the kingdom of God, because Christ’s kingdom is not of this world.

The church also has the power and authority to preach the Gospel as member ofGod’s kingdom, to teach people in God’s name the word of the scriptures, what isgood and what the Lord requires of them, Mt. 28: 1 9; Acts 20:27 says “For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God.

  1. What has been handed over to the church?
  2. What is the promised victory of the Church?
