Text: 1 Samuel 2:12-36; 1 Samuel 3:11-18

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 2:12, “Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the Lord.” (KJV)

No church can prosper in the absence of holiness. The Church cannot prosper when you have Hophni and Phinehas in positions of leadership. It is unfortunate that the Bible said the children of Eli who were in charge of the tabernacle did not know the Lord. It is unfortunate that some people who are in church leadership do not know the Lord, and it is not difficult to know whether a leader know the Lord or not. You don’t know it by his preaching and you don’t know it by his teaching. Jesus made it easy for us: you shall know them by their fruits (Mathew 7:16).

We are known by our fruits and not by the positions we occupy. Our position should agree with the fruits. The Bible said, “Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit” (Mathew 7:17). If a man has a position but does not have the fruit, he has betrayed the position. The Bible said that Hophni and Phinehas were sons of Belial. The term Belial means “worthless” or “wicked”. They were priests but they were children of the devil. What are you today? Whatever position you occupy, what are you today? The church will find it difficult to live in victory, if the leaders are not children of God. There must be holiness of living.

Hophni and Phinehas were living in adultery with women who came to worship the Lord in the tabernacle. Is there anybody in the church living in adultery with you? Is there any leader in the church living in adultery with you? Whoever that leader may be, if you are living in adultery with any leader in the church, you are one of the enemies of the church. You are making the church a laughing stock to the devil and you are making the church defeated in the hands of the devil.

Sin is a disgrace; sin is a reproach and sin brings somebody low. Why did Jacob place a curse on Rueben? Because Reuben went in to his father’s wife and slept with her. Jacob cursed Reuben and said, ‘Reuben, you are my first born, my might and the excellence of my power but you will never prevail’ (Genesis 49:3-4). Reuben carried this curse to the end of his life. Why was he not afraid to climb on his father’s wife?

The Bible said that Eli, the priest and judge of Israel chose to honour his sons above God (1 Samuel 2:29). Eli failed to do what he should do. Eli should have suspended his children, removed them from the church leadership for abuse of priestly office and tell them that adulterers should not be priests in the house of God. Rather, he continued to allow his sons to work at the tabernacle (1 Samuel 4:1–5).

Sometimes, church leaders fail to do what they should do, when evil happens in the church. Some leaders will say let us put human face to it and the church will sink in iniquity.

Children of Christ are supposed to be people of victory. We are not from the world; we walk in victory; we fight in victory and we are victorious because Jesus Christ Has given us victory. Let us live in holiness because it is the platform for all victory, and no matter how the devil comes, we shall be victorious because our victory is in Christ.

Today’s Nugget: Holiness is the platform for all victory.
